Who Are We?
The FIRE Within Team here at Green Mountain High School, located in Lakewood, Colorado, is a team of 11 students hand picked by our teachers, Mr. Davis and Mr. Maeding. We are part of a program created by the Carson J Spencer Foundation, the program now reaching over 60 Schools in the state. As a part of the FIRE Within Group, our end goal is to prevent suicide, by solving a root cause around suicide.
What Training Do We Have?
As a part of the FIRE Within Team we have gone through multiple training courses, including JA Be Entrepreneurial, QPR, and safe messaging.
JA Be Entrepreneurial-
The JA Be Entrepreneurial course is a course that sent us through the facets of starting and running a business, including exercises about innovation, as well as important pieces of the running of a business, including budgeting, and ethical business practices. This course was taught by volunteer Mr. Chas Klisis
We have also been trained to use QPR, a form of suicide prevention that stands for Question Persuade Refer. The first aspect of QPR, Question, requires you asking open ended questions and looking for cues. These cues are both Verbal or Non-Verbal, and vary widely. Verbal cues can be statements including "I don't want to be here anymore", "No one would miss me if I were gone" as well as directly saying "I'm considering suicide". Non-Verbal Cues are hard to pin down, bu include depression, lack of interest in activities they used to like, varied sleeping and eating schedules. This leads to the second tenant, Persuade. This is the key facet of QPR, as it involves persuading the other person to stop considering suicide, giving them reasons to live. The final piece of QPR, refer, revolves around giving people mental health resources. This is our key training for suicide prevention.
What Is A Root Cause?
While working with the Carson J. Spencer Foundation we learned to think upstream about problems. Thinking upstream means to address what causes the problem, rather than dealing with the consequences after the problem occurs. Root causes are those upstream issues we need to address. Relating directly to suicide prevention, we aim to solve problems that will lead to suicide, rather than dealing with the after affects. We still put resources to preventing suicide down the way, preventing people who are actively considering suicide from performing the act, but the bulk of our efforts go towards thinking upstream about a problem and addressing a root cause.
What Root Cause Are We Addressing?
The root cause we have chosen to address is lack of or poor communication between parents and teens. To solve this we are writing a book, Dear Parents, From, Teens. Click the below link to learn more about the book itself.
Who are we partnered with?
We are currently partnered with several organizations, including the Carson J. Spencer Foundation, the Jefferson Center for Mental Health, and the West Chamber of Commerce. The Carson J Spencer Foundation is the founding company of the FIRE Within Program, and we work directly with the company's CEO Dr. Sally Spencer-Thomas. The Jefferson Center for Mental Health is our Class Sponsor, and have been active in helping us refine our understanding of suicide and Mental Health
